A decade ago, Diamond Jim Tyler's book by this title was a resounding success because it contained workers- commercial, real-world magic that had been performed successfully, over a period of years by a magician whose experience with the material was plainly evident.  The book's first printing sold out.

Ten years later, the movie version is out and selling briskly.  This material continues to attract performers seeking material for restaurants and strolling engagements.

The content includes magic with cards, coins, matches, straws... essentially the restaurant magician's arsenal.  Some highlights with familiar plots include an animated drinking straw, an animated card box, a multi-phase ring and string routine, and a twist on Vernon's "Spellbound" using colored stones.

If you're looking for commercial magic your audience probably hasn't seen, check out "Birthday Bill", a customizable routine that can be used to communicate nearly any message.  Mr. Tyler's "Cat and Mouse" is a comedic card revelation reminiscent of Curtis Kam's routine with a rat trap that I reviewed a few years ago, but much safer for both the performer and the audience! And "The Gunslinger" may well be the impromptu card revelation most associated with this magical Texan.

From a production standpoint, this is clearly a do-it-yourself production.  It certainly conveys an atmosphere of fun and is more than adequate in conveying the instruction; the production is a combination of rudimentary tools and a professional attitude.

What the disc may lack in productive innovation, it more than makes up in quality and quantity of content.  There are 23 routines here, most which are demonstrated in both formal (Magic Castle, Magic Circle) and informal (restaurant, magic shop) environments.  If you're not familiar with the material, you can preview most of it online.  Mr. Tyler's website houses many clips.

This is an easy recommendation for any working close-up magician.  Do yourself a favor and pick up copies of Mr. Tyler's excellent Bamboozlers books while you're at it.
